Response to the National Diabetes Implementation Plan consultation
In responding to the online consultation on the Diabetes in Australia: focus on the future Diabetes Implementation Plan, AHPA noted a range of issues related to the availability of appropriate allied health services. Our response noted our strong support for prevention initiatives and improved identification of ‘at risk’ consumers, particularly remote Australians and First Australians but noted that the implementation plan provided no clear referral pathway and funding mechanism in the current plan to connect these consumers with the care they need. This was a clear trend throughout the Implementation Plan—despite the identification of a range of activities to support consumers, no mechanisms were identified to increase access and funding for vital allied health services for consumers with diabetes.
