About
ADEA is the peak national body for diabetes education.
We accredit Credentialled Diabetes Educators (CDEs) - qualified health professionals who have additional qualifications and experience in diabetes management and education.
We support our members and all people living with and at risk of diabetes. We do this through advocacy, education, setting standards of practice, and working with government and others to embed diabetes care and education across the healthcare system.
Vision
Our vision is to transform the lives of all people living with diabetes through excellence in diabetes education.
Advocacy
ADEA supports, promotes and empowers our members by setting standards of practice to ensure CDEs deliver excellence in diabetes education, management and care, and provide diabetes education for members and the broader health workforce.
We are the leading organisation in advocating to government and other bodies for best practice, person-centred diabetes education and care to ensure all Australians have access to expert advice from a CDE to prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to diabetes and, where diabetes has been diagnosed, to manage and live well with their diabetes.
Regulation / Accreditation
CDEs are a self-regulated health profession. ADEA accredits eligible health professionals as CDEs where they have met the following requirements:
completed an ADEA-accredited Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Management and Care or relevant higher university qualification, and
completed ADEA’s credentialling program, and
meet ongoing continuing professional development requirements, and
comply with ADEA’s code of conduct.
Accreditation as a CDE is a requirement to:
provide government-funded diabetes education services funded though Medicare Australia
provide some services through the Department of Veterans Affairs
to authorise access to government-subsidised diabetes products and services through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)
