About
The Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors (ASGC) is a special interest group of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA). The HGSA was formed in 1977 as a collective forum for all disciplines working in human genetics. The ASGC was established to represent practitioners providing genetic counselling or working in related areas. The HGSA is a full member of the International Federation of Human Genetics Societies.
Vision
ASGC: To provide a strong voice and leadership in the development of policies and guidelines within the discipline of genetic counselling. To support the active involvement of genetic counsellors in research and education.
HGSA: To provide equitable access to excellence in genetic health care across the lifespan. Our mission is to be the leading Australasian professional organisation in human genetics, working collaboratively and inclusively, to advance the provision of quality genetic health for all, through research, education and advocacy.
Genetic Counselling is a self-regulated profession under the Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling. The HGSA is a full member of the National Alliance of Self-regulating Health Professions (NASRHP). The Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling provide regulation for genetic counsellors and accreditation of the university degrees in accordance with the NASRHP Standards. Genetic counsellors who completed additional training and can be awarded the title Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia FHGSA (genetic counselling).
Advocacy
Regulation / Accreditation
Genetic Counselling is a self-regulated profession. The Human Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) Board of Censors for Genetic Counselling assesses candidates for the HGSA Council for the certification of genetic counsellors and accreditation of postgraduate genetic counselling training programs. Those with certification can use the term Fellow of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia FHGSA (genetic counselling). There are mandated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements to be a certified genetic counsellor.
